Lata Mangeshkar: Early Life, Birth, Family

Lata Mangeshkar was born on 28 September 1929 in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. His father’s name is Shri Dinanath Mangeshkar, and he was a Marathi musician, classical singer, and theatre actor.

His mother’s name was Shevanti Devi, which was Gujarati in origin. Shanti Devi was the second wife of Deenanath Mangeshkar.

His first wife’s name was Narmada Devi, after whose death he was married to Sevanti Devi, the younger sister of Narmada Devi. Apart from Lata Mangeshkar, he has three sisters and a brother. Her name is Meena Khadikar, Asha Bhosle, and Usha Mangeshkar and her brother’s name is Hriday Nath Mangeshkar? Lata Mangeshkar was the eldest child of her father.

The surname of Pandit Dinanath was Hardikar.

He changed his surname to Mangeshkar because Pandit Deenanath Ji was a resident of Mangeshi in Goa, which changed his surname.

Beginning of singer career

When Pandit Dinanath died suddenly in 1942, Lata Mangeshkar was only 13 years old, and the responsibility of her family had come on her.

Being responsible, Lata Ji was looking for a career so that she could fulfil the responsibilities of her household. For which Lata Ji worked in some Hindi and Marathi films. But he did not like acting at all.

Lata Ji’s first film as an actress was “Pahili Mangalagore”, in which she played the role of Snehaprabha Pradhan’s younger sister.

Apart from this, Lata ji worked in many films like Majhe Bal, Chimukala Sansar, Gajbhau, Badi Maa Maand and Chhatrapati Shivaji.

But when Lata Ji stepped into music in 1948, singers like Noor Jahan, Amirbai Carnatic and Shamshad Begum had left their indelible mark.

Due to this, it wasn’t very easy for Lata Ji to make her mark in the field of music. Lata Ji sang her first song for a Marathi film which could not be released.

Lata Mangeshkar’s identity as a playback singer

Her guru Ustad Ghulam Haider was the one who recognized Lata Ji as a playback singer.

Ghulam Haider Ji gave her a different identity in the field of music because people believed that Lata Ji’s voice was too thin and she was not fit to become a playback singer then.

Ustad Ghulam Haider got Lata Ji to meet many producers-directors, but her success could not be achieved.

Then in 1948, Ghulam Haider Sahab sang a song in a film “Majboor” which was “Dil Mera Toda”.

This song was the first hit song of Lata Ji’s life, and thus Ghulam Haider sahib Ji was considered the godfather of Lata Ji.
